S.P.E.C.T.R.E.’s Take on the Night Watch
November 30, 2007
With all the talk about the Night Watch, and being either the ‘hunter’ or the ‘hunted,’ I decided to look for a scene that fits all of our zany ideas about the teen guard versus the infiltrators. My choice for a scene is the opening pre-title sequence from the second James Bond Film. (Don’t worry, I know the Bond films aren’t the greatest, but the scene seems to fit the Night Watch Issue…)
P.S. There are some hedges like that around the friary…we better watch our backs…
Ben Hur – Chariot Race – Part 3/3
November 30, 2007
The last and final scene of the Chariot Race from Ben Hur. This scene is the shortest, but it contains the last stretch of the race and Pilate’s Speech to Judah. Enjoy!
Ben Hur – Chariot Race – Part 2/3
November 29, 2007
The main part of the chariot race. You’ll probably won’t feel the same effect as you do on a big screen, but it is a pretty amazing scene for a 1959 film. This video is about Seven Minutes long, and when it ends, the race isn’t even entirely finished. The audio isn’t the best but it is fairly good. Enjoy!
Ben Hur – Chariot Race – Part 1/3
November 28, 2007
‘Ben Hur’ has been one of my favorite movies since I was a little boy. The chariot race was the biggest thing I had ever seen in a movie (Before the glorious days of C.G. Imagery) and after seeing the Grand Race, I always wanted a chariot, but now that I’m older, I realize that there is more to it than simply riding around in a circle. Perhaps the Friars would be interested in building a course for an Encampment Tournament?
Please note that this is the pre-race scene. The preparation of the chariots and the ‘March of the Charioteers’ around the stadium. This is Part 1 of a 3 part post series, I’ll have the other parts up by next week.
Deus Vult! – The First Crusade is Preached – November 27th, 2007
November 27, 2007

On this day, 912 years ago to the date, Pope Urban II preached the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont in France. The Council lasted from November 18 to November 28, and was attended by about 300 clerics from throughout France. Urban discussed Cluniac reforms of the Church, and also extended the excommunication of Philip I of France for his adulterous remarriage to Bertrade of Montfort. On November 27, Urban spoke for the first time about the problems in the east, as he declared a Crusade against the Muslims who had occupied the Holy Land and were attacking the Eastern Roman Empire.
Enclosed below is one of the version of Urban’s Sermon by Robert the Monk:
The Sermon of Pope Urban II, Recorded by
Robert wrote Urban’s Sermon perhaps 25 years after the speech, but he may have been present at the council.
Oh, race of Franks, race from across the mountains, race chosen and beloved by God as shines forth in very many of your works set apart from all nations by the situation of your country, as well as by your catholic faith and the honor of the holy church! To you our discourse is addressed and for you our exhortation is intended. We wish you to know what a grievous cause has led us to Your country, what peril threatening you and all the faithful has brought us.
From the confines of Jerusalem and the city of Constantinople a horrible tale has gone forth and very frequently has been brought to our ears, namely, that a race from the kingdom of the Persians, an accursed race, a race utterly alienated from God, a generation forsooth which has not directed its heart and has not entrusted its spirit to God, has invaded the lands of those Christians and has depopulated them by the sword, pillage and fire; it has led away a part of the captives into its own country, and a part it has destroyed by cruel tortures; it has either entirely destroyed the churches of God or appropriated them for the rites of its own religion. They destroy the altars, after having defiled them with their uncleanness. They circumcise the Christians, and the blood of the circumcision they either spread upon the altars or pour into the vases of the baptismal font. When they wish to torture people by a base death, they perforate their navels, and dragging forth the extremity of the intestines, bind it to a stake; then with flogging they lead the victim around until the viscera having gushed forth the victim falls prostrate upon the ground. Others they bind to a post and pierce with arrows. Read the rest of this entry »
A Classic Duel
November 26, 2007
One of the most classical sword fights in movie history. Between Sir Robin and Sir Guy from “The Adventures of Robin Hood.” It sort of reminds me of the days when I used to take on my dad in many an epic sword-fight. Technically, we’d be all over the place like in the video, but the only thing that stopped us from getting carried away was my mom… Of course I was always Robin Hood and my dad Sir Guy, but the only reason I lost was because I felt bad for my dad and went easy on him.
At least give me credit for trying to be chivalrous!
