Medieval Church

Another more recent work of mine, it needs a lot of fixing up. I’m planning on incorporating something like it (if not this exact scene) it into the storyline at some point, though the setting may change along with the time.

The large door of the church creaked open in its fine glory. The day light flooded in through the hallway, casting shadowy figures of the small entrouge upon the polished floor of the church. Their footsteps echoing through the dimly lit structure as they passed a small shrine of St. Joseph. Baldwin led them on down the centre aisle till they came within twenty feet of the High Altar. He gently lowered himself to his knees as the others followed his pious lead. Making the sign of the cross, he gently lowered his head in silent prayer. Each man had his own intention, yet all were united in the same request: A safe return journey to Jerusalem. Baldwin silently petitioned the Blessed Mother to intercede to her Divine Son, to grant her children the graces necessary to overcome the trials upon the difficult road ahead.

Blacwin had silently broken off from the men when they had entered the great Church, and silently knelt in one of the frontmost pews. He was moved in a peculiarly silent way by the pious qualities of the knights. The young man watched in awe as the knights silently knelt and prayed in the soft candlelight of the cathedral. An unearthly silence resounded throughout the cold structure as the men prayed, until it was broken by the sound of the knights returning to their feet. They bowed silently towards the altar before turning back down the aisle. Blacwin was swiftly on their heels as they continued towards the door. It slowly creaked open, and the men once again entered the outside world, strengthened by the timely moments of their mental prayer.

The small caravan of soldiers left teh bustling town and followed a winding road out of the countryside. Baldwin led them on, his brother Blacwin riding by his side, followed by Edgar, William, and last of all, Godfrey, who tagged along. His mind wandered over many things, yet most primarily, the road to be taken back to Jerusalem. William was the noblest of the men, yet the most humble. He rode along in silence. Edgar rode several feet behind the two brothers, remaining within earshot of their conversation. The brothers conversed, discussing their many happenings since their separation years ago.

{It is at this point where the Crusader’s Tale shall be entwined. Arriving in Italy, the men hear rumors of the passage by Asia Minor being cut off and much too dangerous for their travel. So they turn to the sea to seek passage to Jerusalem.}
