Despair…
February 6, 2008
This is meant to be a follow-up post to my “The Joker Strikes,” but this time I am taking a different look altogether at the case of Heath Ledger’s death by ‘accidental overdose.’ The life of despair…something which all celebrities encounter on their search for fame and money. (Though I don’t intend to say that all actors/actresses lead a life searching for fame and money, but rather end up in the same field no matter what they do.) It’s a matter of living for the present life, living for oneself, without looking at the the spiritual realm of the world, concerning Heaven and Hell, and the destination of one’s soul.
No matter how hard you look, you will never find a celebrity who has been able to avoid the ‘road’ which Hollywood sets you on. That is, the road which leads to the realization of the emptyness which the things of this world give, and it is at that point, where people turn to the numbing effects of alcohol and drugs to fill this empty void within their soul. My intention is not to label Heath Ledger as an addict or any such thing, but rather, I am looking at the dark side of the situation. Clearly, the role of the Joker has drained him physically and mentally, and in the end, he had to turn to sleeping pills to help get some rest. Is there the possibility that he took a deliberate overdoes of the pills? We cannot be sure, but one thing is for certain, being drained and in such a dangerous state, he did not have any form of prayer life to help confront the dark storm.
Mel Gibson is a similar (yet not so similar) example. He recently has been arrested on D.W.I. Charges (Driving While Intoxicated), much to my surprise. This is the man who was able to capture the moving depiction of the last 12 hours of Christ’s life, how on earth did he end up an alcoholic? When one carefully looks at the cause of Alcoholism, it normally is simply a person’s own way of escaping reality, and seeking a numbing agent to block out his conscience.
Another late ‘victim’ of this entire ‘despair’ scenario, is the singer (if that’s what you want to call her) Britney Spears. She recently shaved her own head in a nervous breakdown, in order that she could ‘escape’ testing for certain drugs within her system. Strange as it may seem, all of these Hollywood incidents are connected one way or another. Mainly by the simple fact that people eventually lose track of what they must seek on their journey through life. The only thing which we may do for these poor souls is pray for their conversion, and hope that they will accept the grace to turn their lives around, and focus on Our Lord and His Blessed Mother.

Ah. One of my favorite topics. Christainity in Hollywood. So many people simply bash the celebrities without stopping to imagine how empty their lives are- as, indeed, are any of those without the hope of salvation. Many Christians tend to label Hollywood as a “den of evil” instead of acknowledging that it is a place full of broken people in need of as much love and kindness as our broken friends at home.
There is an excellent book called “Behind the Screen” dealing with the topic of Christianity and Christains in Hollywood and in films. I heartily recommend it to anyone interesting in this subject.

I agree. No matter how immoral their lives are, or how many problems they have, we must realize that they are STILL human. They have free wills, and will always have a chance to turn back. But what is interesting, is: ‘what seperates us from them?’ Free will… We can just as easily fall into the same footsteps as they have. Prayer and Sacrifice…
You’re right about Hollywood being full of broken people. We seem to notice it all there, but we seem to overlook that there are a lot of ‘broken’ people leading normal lives as well.

Heath Ledger, from a video I saw, was an alchaholic…

The other thing to remember is that the world of celebrity becomes something of a trap. Once you get in, it’s almost impossible to get out. Sure, you could stop acting and go hole up in a cabin in the woods somewhere and eventually the paparazzi would forget you…but how do you do that if you love acting? If that is what you were made to do?
Karen Kingsbury is definetely a “fluffy chick lit” Christain writer…but I was very impressed by the way she portrayed the lives of film stars in her latest series “Firstborn.” It’s a really fast read, so even if you don’t like chick lit, it’s still worth picking up.

I rember whrn I first realized how much the devil is present in Hollywood when I heard Fr. Corpi’s conversion story for the first time. It’s dangerous stuff and we do have to pray for the people who seem to be consumed in Hollywoods ways. It’s really scary.

I think I saw that video before…though I could be wrong. But I’ve certainly seen some of Fr. Corapi’s talks, very interesting…

Prayers, prayers and more prayers. And once again, prayers.

Here’s the latest on Heath Ledger. The official report is now not drug overdose, but accidental fatal combination of differant drugs. Not suicide.

It’s a serious post, but somehow it’s hard for me to imagine Mary-Kate Olson all grown up and being the first person called here…I know she is and that she and her sister are very sucessful young women now, but the last time I saw them in a film, then were three years old…

Hmm, I’ll check it out. Thanks! And in regards to Olsen, I still can’t figure why she was the first person called…she must be involved in some other way… (Not intending in saying she is related to the death, but must have a deeper connection with Ledger…)

Yeah, I think they were friends or something. The original reports were saying that he was actually in her apartment. He wasn’t, of course, but the phone call must have confused some reporters.
